Before & After Commissioning Testing

Before commissioning testing in a substation involves conducting a comprehensive set of tests on the equipment and systems prior to their integration and operation. These tests ensure that all components are functioning correctly, meet performance criteria, and are installed properly.

The aim is to identify and rectify any potential issues, verify connections, and ensure overall reliability and safety. After commissioning testing occurs once the substation is operational, and periodic tests are performed to assess equipment performance and condition under normal operating conditions. These tests monitor ongoing performance, identify emerging issues, and maintain optimal operation.

Equipment Testing

At Akuntha, we specialise in equipment testing as a crucial part of substation testing services. Our team of experts conducts comprehensive evaluations of various electrical components within substations to ensure their reliable performance and adherence to industry standards.

We meticulously assess the functionality, integrity, and safety of equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, relays, switchgear, and protective systems. Through a range of tests including insulation resistance, contact resistance, timing analysis, impedance measurements, and voltage/current testing, we identify potential issues, faults, or deviations from specifications. Our thorough equipment testing enables us to provide timely maintenance and corrective measures.

Services offered in Testing of Equipment

At Akuntha we provide a range of substation testing services to ensure
the efficient and reliable performance of your substation.

Transformers

We conduct comprehensive testing of transformers to ensure their reliable performance. Our testing includes measuring insulation resistance (IR) and polarisation index (PI) values, conducting breakdown voltage (BDV) and oil routine tests as per IS:1866 standards, testing oil for dissolved gas analysis (DGA), and measuring tan delta and capacitance of bushings and main windings. We also measure winding resistance at all tap positions and perform all low voltage routine tests.

Current Transformers

We specialise in testing current transformers to verify their insulation resistance through primary-to-earth measurement using a 5 KV Megger. We also measure capacitance and tan delta, crucial parameters for accurate current measurement. Additionally, we check the star point earthing to ensure proper grounding.

Circuit Breakers

Our expertise extends to testing circuit breakers to ensure their proper functioning. We measure static contact resistance, check the current of close and trip coils, and measure breaker timings to ensure accurate and coordinated operations. In the case of vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs), we perform high voltage tests (VI testing) and insulation resistance tests.

Potential Transformers

We excel in testing potential transformers (PTs) to ensure accurate voltage measurement. We measure secondary voltage, check star point earthing, and conduct insulation resistance measurement from the primary to earth. Additionally, we measure capacitance and tan delta for comprehensive assessment.

Isolators

We conduct main contact resistance measurements and earth switch contact resistance measurements for isolators. These tests ensure proper electrical contact and continuity during isolation operations, enhancing the reliability and safety of the substation.

Surge Arrestors

We conduct insulation resistance measurements and leakage current measurements for surge arrestors. We also verify the structure earthing to ensure effective protection against transient voltage surges. Our testing procedures guarantee the dependability and performance of surge arrestors, protecting substation equipment from voltage surges and potential damage.

Batteries/Battery Charger

We offer comprehensive testing services for batteries and battery chargers. Our testing includes measuring specific gravity and voltage of pilot cells, checking solution levels, performing battery impedance testing, and conducting discharge tests (run-down tests). Additionally, we ensure the proper functioning of the discharge cycle.

Protection System

We specialise in testing all relays within the protection system, including comprehensive logic checks. We also utilise thermal imaging for substation inspection, identifying potential issues related to heat dissipation and thermal anomalies. Additionally, we monitor DC leakage daily and address any issues promptly to maintain the integrity and reliability of the protection system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Substation testing refers to the process of evaluating the performance, safety, and reliability of electrical substations. It involves various tests and inspections conducted on substation equipment and systems to ensure their proper functioning and adherence to industry standards.

Substation testing is crucial for several reasons. It helps identify potential equipment failures, ensures optimal performance and reliability, enhances electrical safety, minimises downtime, and helps maintain compliance with regulatory requirements. Regular testing allows for proactive maintenance and helps mitigate risks associated with substation operations

Substation testing is typically carried out by qualified electrical engineers, technicians, or specialised testing companies with expertise in substation equipment and systems. These professionals possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and equipment to conduct accurate and reliable testing.

There are many different types of substation tests that can be performed, depending on the specific equipment and systems involved. Some of the most common tests include:

Transformer testing:

Insulation resistance testing

Dielectric testing:

Current transformer (CT)

Circuit breaker testing

During substation testing, our technicians strictly follow safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, glasses, ear protection, flame-resistant clothing, insulated gloves, and safety boots. They also adhere to electrical safety standards and employ isolation and lockout/tagout procedures.

Substation testing identifies potential electrical hazards, such as faulty equipment, insulation breakdown, or improper protective system coordination. By detecting these issues early on, it allows for timely corrective measures, mitigates safety risks, and protects personnel and equipment from electrical hazards.
